Mildred Mae Joines Millsaps was born at the home of her grandparents, William Newton Joines and Huretta McCaslin Joines on December 2, 1921. She is the daughter of Charles Ross and Jessie Mae Joines.

She has always been a talented seamstress and as the family story goes, or as Jessie Mae claimed, her Mother put a spool of thread and a thimble in her hand when she was born which resulted in her talent and enjoyment of sewing.

She graduated from Madisonville High School in 1942 and later went to work at Hollywood Theatre in downtown Madisonville. The theatre was located where a park is today. Mildred sold ticket in the box office. The manager of the theatre at that time was Gault Brown and his wife Dovie Leigh who became wonderful friends to the entire Joines family.

During that time Mildred met Jess Douglas (J.D.) Millsaps whose beautiful family home, on College Street South, was eventually sold to Kyker Funeral Home upon the death of Mrs Millsaps, J.D.’s Mother, and finally torn down. J.D. was half owner of the Shell Service Station that was across from the First Baptist Church in Madisonville, TN along with Carroll Cagle. When we entered World War II he sold his half of the station to Mr. Cagle and joined the Navy.

Mildred and J.D. were married on August 19, 1953 and moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where they operated a motel that catered to tourists seeking the ocean and beaches.

Later they moved to Pensacola, Florida where they ran another motel. During this time they bought a home in Pensacola and welcomed the birth of their own child, a son, Jess Douglas (Doug) Millsaps 111.

J.D. Jr was born July 16, 1919 and died February 24, 1964. After the death of J.D. Mildred quit her job in Gulf Breeze, FL and moved with her son back to Tennessee to be near her family.

She eventually settled in Chattanooga, Tennessee where she first worked at Red Bank Baptist Church as secretary and then for Dr. Don Reynolds then for Dr. Anotony Hodges, a dentist for whom she worked until 2006 when she quit work to enjoy spending time with her new grandchild, Jessica.

She eventually helped Doug raise Jessica and they moved to Tellico Plains, Tennessee where she lived until she died in 2019.
