Harriette Joines Hodge June 2007

Harriette Isbell Joines Hodge was born December 9, 1915. She was born on her grandparents place, the William Joines family farm. Her parents are Jessie Mae and Charles Ross Joines.

Harriette is a twin to her sister Tommie Isbell. They were named by big sister Huretta Clementine who named them after the couple who raised Jessie Mae after she was orphaned, Tom and Harriett Isbell.

Harriette lived on the Joines farm until Tom and Harriette Isbill gave Ross and Jessie a house in Madisonville, Tennessee. The son of Issac (Ike) and Ada Hodge, named Edgar met and courted Harriette and would walk her home from school. It wasn’t long before Harriette was married at the young age of 17 to the young man. She married on September 21, 1932 and a little over a 10 months later delivered their 1st son, Tommy Bryant and carried him at the same time her mother was carrying her 7th and final daughter. She delivered her 2nd child, Charles and then they lived for a while across the street from her parents in Madisonville with his parents where Loretta was born and for a while in downtown Madisonville on Tellico Street.

Eventually Edgar bought a property from his father-in-law that is located on Oak Grove Road in Madisonville, which was farmed by Edgar and Harriette. They built a small house on the property and Edgar's parents live the rest of their lives there. They eventually had two more children for a total of five. Patrica (Patsy) Ann and they had a son William Eddie Hodge who was born premature and they lost 21 days after his birth in 1941. Their youngest daughter, Patsy, passed away in 2007 at the age of 60.

Harriette is a wonderful, loving Mother and wife and is devoted to her family. She made countless quilts just as her Mother had done before her.

Since she is not quite able to care for herself, today she is living at a nursing home in Madisonville where she has made even more quilts and given them as gifts to her family. She has always enjoyed life and is an outgoing person and a good friend. There was always someone visiting her house because she has so many friends and was always so engaged with others.
