Poem in Memory of Huretta J. Davis – January 22, 2004 by Nora Younes
Introduction: It was hard for me to write a poem for Huretta, because I realized no words could come close to describing her, she was truly unique. So then, I tried to think of what she would say, but then I realized she wouldn't say anything about herself to praise, she was too humble for that. I began to write some words down, went through a couple of drafts, and what I wrote I hope describes how she was.
As I sit down and look at the night sky, I wonder why,
Why God would take away somebody so humble?
Somebody so kind. His actions are mysterious and no one
Will probably ever understand them.
It is hard to lose some one You love, because in your mind you keep asking
yourself the Question "what if?" or "I wish". I wish I talked to her more
often, I wish I took her out to lunch more, What if I wasn't so mean, would
that make it so much better? You feel so helpless, so
Torn, because if you did those things, asked those questions,
Things might have a different outcome. But then I am
Thankful, thankful she's not suffering anymore, thankful she
Doesn't have to watch other people suffer. She doesn't have to
See people going hungry, or people homeless or poor.
She doesn't have to see people die. She doesn't have to live in
A world were being nice is long lost, and meanness and
Rudeness rules everybody. But not her. She looked at the Light more than
she looked at the darkness.
She saw the glass half full instead of half empty.
When you are with her, there is
Nothing not to like. It would almost be a sin, if you
Didn't like her, because she would never do anything mean or wrong.
She possessed something so rare. She possessed
Something Tupac Shakur called "unconditional love".
Unconditional love is different from normal love.
Unconditional love is when you never ever stop loving a
Person no matter what went wrong, or no matter how hard
Things got.
I'm not saying that she thought that she would change the world, but I
guarantee you she will spark the mind that will; and inside of that mind she
will be re-born. That's everlasting life.
So now when I think about her being gone, I have mixed
Feelings on the subject…because we have to make the same
Journey ourselves before we can fully understand.
