Obituary for Charlotte Shope Stephens

Charlotte Shope Stephens, 75, of Kingston, TN, passed away peacefully at home on December 15, 2020. Born January 14, 1945, she was preceded in death by her parents William Theodore Shope and Maude Williams Shope, sister Jenness Workman, and brothers Bill Shope Jr. and Bobby Shope.

Her surviving siblings are Joyce Newman, Betty Mayfield, Barbara Heuer, Dennis Shope and Keith Shope all of Sweetwater, and Gail Huffstetler of Dahoinega, Georgia.
Other survivors include her husband of 56 years, Jerry Ray Stephens; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Stephens Bacon and William Eric Bacon Sr.; son, Kent Taylor Stephens; and two grandchildren, Katherine Taylor Bacon and William Bacon Jr. all of Kingston, TN and numerous nieces and nephews.

Charlotte was a long-time member of First Baptist church, Kingston where she served as the Director of the Middle School Youth Department for several years. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Education from The University of Tennessee. She was an educator at Cherokee Middle School and later taught English at Roane State Community College. Charlotte also served as the Assistant Dean of Continuing Education at Roane State Community College. She was a long-standing member of the Riverbend Garden Club and the Town and country FCE organization, serving in leadership roles in each. She also enjoyed being a member of the Third Tuesday Book Group and many bridge groups.

Due to Covid-19, the family will gather for a private Celebration of Life service at First Baptist Church, Kingston, on Saturday, January 9, 2021 at 4:00 p.m. The Service will be led by Jody McLoud. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Building Fund, 215 North Kentucky Street, Kingston, TN 37763.
