PIONEER AND FIRST FAMILY WILSON’S OF TENNESSEE in middle to late 1700's
Isaac Wilson, son of Charles Wilson Sr. from Ireland, married Ann States about 1760 in Augusta County, Virginia. She was born about 1742 in Augusta County, Virginia and died in Washington County, Tennessee. Isaac Wilson and his wife Ann moved from Virginia to the Indian Territories of a land that was in dispute between Virginia and North Carolina. This land was known as The Lands of the Watauga in the Western Frontier of the Washington District, present day Washington County, Tennessee. The exact date he relocated to this area is unknown but Land Grant records and Tax records verify that he was there in 1776. On July 5, 1776 Isaac Wilson was one of the signers of the Watauga Petition requesting to become a part of the State of North Carolina’s State government. Prior to the Petition Washington County, Tennessee historical records show that Isaac Wilson purchased 350 acres on the Nolachucky River April 18, 1776 for 100 English Pounds. Tax records of 1782 also reveal that Isaac Wilson paid 50 English Shillings per 100 acres of land in taxes that year. These records give proof of Isaac Wilson being a settler and pioneer of this area before Tennessee statehood. Other Land Grant records, tax records, and historical records for the Washington District in the mid to late 1700’s show that Isaac’s brothers, Charles, Joseph, and David also lived there. Being a frontiersman and pioneer of his time Isaac Wilson was also a patriot in the American Revolution. Research reveals several Isaac Wilson’s serving in the Continental Army during the war. Pension records show that one Isaac Wilson born 1740 in Virginia was the husband of Ann States. Other records may be found in the following publications: “Over Mountain Men” by Pat Alderman, “Tennessee Cousins” by Worth S. Ray, and “Tennessee During the Revolutionary War” by Samuel Cole Williams. Isaac Wilson and wife Ann States had five known children; Abram Wilson, Charles Wilson, Anna Wilson born 20 Nov 1771 in Virginia and died 18 Feb 1827 in Green County Tennessee, Isaac Wilson Jr., born 1775 in Augusta County Virginia and died 1841 in McMinn County Tennessee, and John Isaac Wilson. Early Tennessee marriage records state that Isaac Wilson Jr. and Rosanna Wilhoit were married in Greene County Tennessee 16 Jan 1796. Washington County Tennessee deed records give the transfer of Isaac Wilson Sr.’s 350 acres on the North side of the Nolachucky to his son Isaac Wilson Jr. on 06 Nov 1805. Additional deed entries show that Isaac Wilson Jr. purchased 20 acres adjacent to his property 05 Oct 1813. Another deed entry shows 151 acres assigned to Isaac Wilson Jr. on 06 Oct 1813. This Writer would like to note for the Reader of this history that Isaac Wilson Sr. and his son Isaac Wilson Jr. were both settled in Tennessee before statehood as verified by petitions, deeds, war records, and marriage records. This makes them Early Pioneers and First Families of Tennessee as set forth by the East Tennessee Historical Society in Knoxville, Tennessee where they are both recorded as such. This makes available to any descendent of Isaac Wilson and son Isaac Wilson Jr. certification as a First Family of Tennessee member upon submission and verification of lineage. WILSON HERALDRY The Wilson Irish Coat of Arms is as follows: Translation: Argent (white) signifies Peace. Vert (green) signifies Hope. Or (gold) denotes Generosity. Crest: A demi-wolf salient vert. Motto: Aviumque volatus. Translation: And a flight of birds. Origin: Ireland Credit and thanks to: |

1775 with Isaac Wilson Sr.
Taken from Jim A. Wilson's www.wilson-moore.com "Isaac Wilson Sr. signed the Watuga Association in Washington County, Tennessee July 5, 1775. On November 6, 1805 he sold all his land in Washington County Tennessee to his son Isaac Jr. His farm was on the north side of the Nolichucky River. The land consisted of 350 acres according to County Deed Bood 9, p. 351. This same land he had aquired from the State of North Carolina in 1782 before Tennessee was a State according to #671 signed and witnessed by Alexander Martin at Fairfield. This information is now in Knoxville, Tennesse in the Knox County Library for the First Families of Tennessee. On Washington County Tennessee Tax List of 1778 see Isaac Wilson, Tennessee Frontiersman in Madisonville, Tennessee, Monroe County Libraray. There you will find more information on the Wilson family." Ezekiel Joines Ezekiel Joines You will also find attached to this person Ezekiel Joines
EZEKIEL 1 JOINES was born Abt. 1726, and died Abt. August 1803 in ,Wilkes Co., NC. He married (1) UNKNOWN. He married (2) SARAH GUNTER July 14, 1779 in Rowan County, North Carolina. Notes for EZEKIEL JOINES: The first record of Ezekiel Joines in North Western North Carolina is the 1778 Tax List for Rowan County. Ezekiel is listed as Ezekiel Jones. Ezekiel was living in Capt. Lyon's District.(Doc# 164) A seach of the Rowan County records did not locate an Ezekiel Jones living there, during this same time period. Ezekiel's son Thomas is listed on the same tax list as Thomas Jines, living in Capt. Johnstons District.(Doc# 164) In a letter written by Wesley Joines, Sr. on Oct. 25, 1920 and published in the book "The Ancestry of Della Blevins Graham" by Della B. Graham in 1955, Wesley states that Ezekiel Joines emigrated from Scotland and settled in what is now Wilkes County, North Carolina. Wesley was the great grandson of Ezekiel. Wesley's father Major Joines lived to be a very old man and could have related this information to Wesley.(Doc # 193) Ezekiel Joines was listed in the 1784-1787 census of Wilkes County, NC and in the 1790 Census of Wilkes County.(Doc# 195, 82) In October of 1789 Ezekiel Joines purchased 200 acres of land from Charles Walker of Franklin County, Georgia.(Doc# 82) There was a Joines family living in Georgia in the late 1700's, the Jabez Joines family. (Doc# 14) Could there be a connection? Also the Noah Joines family from Kentucky has connections to Georgia in the late 1700's.(Doc# 15) In 1791 Ezekiel Joines sold 100 acres to George Payne. The deed states that this was part of a tract of land sold to Ezekiel Joines by Charles Walker.(Doc# 196) In the 1795 tax list of Wilkes County, Ezekiel is listed as Ezekiel Gines owning 187 acres of land and having 1 poll.(Doc# 94) In the 1797 tax list of Wilkes County, Ezekiel is listed as owning 100 acres and having no polls. This meant that Ezekiel was no longer required to pay taxes. Possibly because he had turned 70 years old. If so, he would have been born about 1726.(Doc# 93) Also in the 1797 Tax List Edmund Joines now owns 87 acres of land. Ezekiel Joines was listed in the 1800 Census of Wilkes County along with his wife Sarah.(Doc# 82) Ezekiel Joines left a Will which was presented to the Wilkes County courts in August of 1803. Ezekiel sold his remaining 100 acres of land to Edmund Joines in early July of 1803, which means that Ezekiel probably died in July or August of 1803.(Doc# 194, 197) In his Will, Ezekiel named his wife Sarah. He also named Thomas Joines, Sayer Roberts, Piety Parsons, and Edmund Joines alias Edmund Gunter.( Doc# 194) In Bardsley's, DICTIONARY OF WELSH AND ENGLISH SURNAMES WITH SPECIAL AMERICAN INSTANCES; Published by the Genealogical Publishing Company in 1968, he wrote that the name Joynes originated in Cheshire County, England several centuries ago. (Doc# 211) Cheshire County is located on the border of Wales. The Joynes name is believed to be a Welsh variation of the name Johns. The first record of the Joines (Joynes) family in America was found in Virginia on 24 July 1638 when Randell Crewe brought John Joines along with twelve others to Upper New Norfolk on the Nansemond River. There has been a Joines (Joynes) family on the Eastern Shore of Virginia since then. Could it be that Ezekiel came from this family? (Doc# 1) In 1982 the Ancestry Research Associates of Surrey, England conducted a search of Scotland for the name Joines/Joynes.(Doc# 198) Their research located only one Joynes. George Joynes married Agnes Thomsone in Edinburg, Scotland on 24th of August 1656. They concluded that Joynes/Joines was not a Scottish surname and that there is almost no record of the Joynes/Joines name in Scotland. More About EZEKIEL JOINES: Burial: ,Wilkes Co., NCMarriage Notes for EZEKIEL JOINES and SARAH GUNTER: North Carolina Marriage Bond No. 000125211 - Sarah Gunter married Ezekil Goins 14 July 1779. William Butler was Bondsman and Jo Brevard was the witness. Children of EZEKIEL JOINES and UNKNOWN are: i. MAJOR 2 JOINES, d. Abt. 1781, Eutaw Springs, SC. Notes for MAJOR JOINES: In a letter written by Wesley Joines, Sr. on Oct. 25, 1920 and published in the book "The Ancestry of Della Blevins Graham" by Della B. Graham in 1955, Wesley stated that Ezekiel Joines was married twice and that he had two sons by his first wife, Thomas and Major.(Doc# 193) In the Rowan County, North Carolina Abstracts of Court Minutes 1773 - 1795. there is an entry as follows "Satuday August 8, 1778 - Persons who have not taken the oath of allegiance in Capt. Lyon's Court..... Mason Joynes.(Doc# 92) Could this be Major Joines? Major's father Ezekiel, is believed to have been living in Capt. Lyon's District in 1778.(Doc# 91) Thomas Joines was a Revolutionary War Veteran, proven by the Revolutionary War Pension Application of Jasper Billings. In this application Thomas Jines (Joines) swears in Court that he was with Jasper Billings at the Battle of Eutaw Springs, near Camden, South Carolina. It has been passed down through the Joines Family that Thomas Joines had a brother, Major Joines, that was killed at the Battle of Eutaw Springs.(Doc# 190) 2. ii. T HOMAS JOINES, b. Abt. 1750; d.
