The Second Colony of Germanna

The 1717 Colony from the Kraichgau of Baden and Württemberg, as well as some from the Rhineland Pfalz (Palatinate) settled first across the Rapidan River from Fort Germanna, then from 1725 to 1727 began to move to the Robinson River Valley in present day Madison County and patent land in their own names.

He was said to have died in 1777 during the Revolutionary War in Anson County, NC, leaving a wife and several children. Some number of his children went to South Carolina, some to Alabama, some to Wilkes County, NC, creating much confusion for researchers. (Cordell Clippings, No. 8, Jan. 1993, Pg. 7)

    Another correction to your website:

Ezekiel Joines was born in Northampton County, Virginia, son of Thomas Joyns, Jr. and Catherine unknown. He was not born in Scotland.

His grandfather was Major Joyns, and his great-grandfather was Edmond Joynes, who lived on the Eastern Shore of Virginia from the 1660s.

The Joyneses were from England. There is no evidence to support the claim that they came from Scotland.

The Joyneses on the Eastern Shore are well documented, and their relation to Ezekiel of Wilkes County is confirmed by the Joines DNA project: https://www.familytreedna.com/public/joines?iframe=yresults

    Joyce Joines Newman

EZEKIEL 1 JOINES was born Abt. 1726, and died Abt. August 1803 in ,Wilkes Co., NC. He married (1) UNKNOWN. He married (2) SARAH GUNTER July 14, 1779 in Rowan County, North Carolina. Notes for EZEKIEL JOINES: The first record of Ezekiel Joines in North Western North Carolina is the 1778 Tax List for Rowan County. Ezekiel is listed as Ezekiel Jones. Ezekiel was living in Capt. Lyon's District.(Doc# 164) A seach of the Rowan County records did not locate an Ezekiel Jones living there, during this same time period. Ezekiel's son Thomas is listed on the same tax list as Thomas Jines, living in Capt. Johnstons District.(Doc# 164) In a letter written by Wesley Joines, Sr. on Oct. 25, 1920 and published in the book "The Ancestry of Della Blevins Graham" by Della B. Graham in 1955, Wesley states that Ezekiel Joines emigrated from Scotland and settled in what is now Wilkes County, North Carolina. Wesley was the great grandson of Ezekiel. Wesley's father Major Joines lived to be a very old man and could have related this information to Wesley.(Doc # 193) Ezekiel Joines was listed in the 1784-1787 census of Wilkes County, NC and in the 1790 Census of Wilkes County.(Doc# 195, 82) In October of 1789 Ezekiel Joines purchased 200 acres of land from Charles Walker of Franklin County, Georgia.(Doc# 82) There was a Joines family living in Georgia in the late 1700's, the Jabez Joines family. (Doc# 14) Could there be a connection? Also the Noah Joines family from Kentucky has connections to Georgia in the late 1700's.(Doc# 15) In 1791 Ezekiel Joines sold 100 acres to George Payne. The deed states that this was part of a tract of land sold to Ezekiel Joines by Charles Walker.(Doc# 196) In the 1795 tax list of Wilkes County, Ezekiel is listed as Ezekiel Gines owning 187 acres of land and having 1 poll.(Doc# 94) In the 1797 tax list of Wilkes County, Ezekiel is listed as owning 100 acres and having no polls. This meant that Ezekiel was no longer required to pay taxes. Possibly because he had turned 70 years old. If so, he would have been born about 1726.(Doc# 93) Also in the 1797 Tax List Edmund Joines now owns 87 acres of land. Ezekiel Joines was listed in the 1800 Census of Wilkes County along with his wife Sarah.(Doc# 82) Ezekiel Joines left a Will which was presented to the Wilkes County courts in August of 1803. Ezekiel sold his remaining 100 acres of land to Edmund Joines in early July of 1803, which means that Ezekiel probably died in July or August of 1803.(Doc# 194, 197) In his Will, Ezekiel named his wife Sarah. He also named Thomas Joines, Sayer Roberts, Piety Parsons, and Edmund Joines alias Edmund Gunter.( Doc# 194) In Bardsley's, DICTIONARY OF WELSH AND ENGLISH SURNAMES WITH SPECIAL AMERICAN INSTANCES; Published by the Genealogical Publishing Company in 1968, he wrote that the name Joynes originated in Cheshire County, England several centuries ago. (Doc# 211) Cheshire County is located on the border of Wales. The Joynes name is believed to be a Welsh variation of the name Johns. The first record of the Joines (Joynes) family in America was found in Virginia on 24 July 1638 when Randell Crewe brought John Joines along with twelve others to Upper New Norfolk on the Nansemond River. There has been a Joines (Joynes) family on the Eastern Shore of Virginia since then. Could it be that Ezekiel came from this family? (Doc# 1) In 1982 the Ancestry Research Associates of Surrey, England conducted a search of Scotland for the name Joines/Joynes.(Doc# 198) Their research located only one Joynes. George Joynes married Agnes Thomsone in Edinburg, Scotland on 24th of August 1656. They concluded that Joynes/Joines was not a Scottish surname and that there is almost no record of the Joynes/Joines name in Scotland. More About EZEKIEL JOINES: Burial: ,Wilkes Co., NCMarriage Notes for EZEKIEL JOINES and SARAH GUNTER: North Carolina Marriage Bond No. 000125211 - Sarah Gunter married Ezekil Goins 14 July 1779. William Butler was Bondsman and Jo Brevard was the witness. Children of EZEKIEL JOINES and UNKNOWN are:

    i. MAJOR 2 JOINES, d. Abt. 1781, Eutaw Springs, SC. Notes for MAJOR JOINES: In a letter written by Wesley Joines, Sr. on Oct. 25, 1920 and published in the book "The Ancestry of Della Blevins Graham" by Della B. Graham in 1955, Wesley stated that Ezekiel Joines was married twice and that he had two sons by his first wife, Thomas and Major.(Doc# 193) In the Rowan County, North Carolina Abstracts of Court Minutes 1773 - 1795. there is an entry as follows "Satuday August 8, 1778 - Persons who have not taken the oath of allegiance in Capt. Lyon's Court..... Mason Joynes.(Doc# 92) Could this be Major Joines? Major's father Ezekiel, is believed to have been living in Capt. Lyon's District in 1778.(Doc# 91) Thomas Joines was a Revolutionary War Veteran, proven by the Revolutionary War Pension Application of Jasper Billings. In this application Thomas Jines (Joines) swears in Court that he was with Jasper Billings at the Battle of Eutaw Springs, near Camden, South Carolina. It has been passed down through the Joines Family that Thomas Joines had a brother, Major Joines, that was killed at the Battle of Eutaw Springs.(Doc# 190) 2. ii. T HOMAS JOINES, b. Abt. 1750; d. Ezekiel Joynes from Dee Reynolds

Hist 1746 Ezekiel Joynes came from Scotland. One source says that two Joynes brothers sailed from Dublin, Ireland in 1690, one fell overboard while trying to rescue his hat, the other was Ezekiel. Another story goes with three Joynes brothers, who when they arrive in America, went seperate ways, one South, one West and one North. There is another rumor that they were heard to say that they were from England, but that was not really where they came from, and they could not reveal where they were from because they had to protect those who remained behind. Ezekiel lived in Wilkes Co. N.C. prior to the Revolutionary War. He was married twice and had two sets of children. His wives are unknown, although it is said that his first wife may have been a red haired Scotswoman, possibly a Pruitt. His second wife may have been a Gunter. The following notes are from the Family Tree Maker site of Eldon Dean Joynes, [email protected] The first record of Ezekiel Joynes in North Western NC is the 1778 Tax List for Rowan Co.. Ezekiel is listed at Ezekiel Jones. Ezekiel was living in Capt. Lyon's District. (Doc # 164) A search of the Rowan Co. records did not locate an Ezekiel Jones living there, during this time period. Ezekiel's son Thomas is listed on the same tax list as Thomas Jines, living in Capt. Johnston's District. (Doc. # 164) In a letter written by Wesley Joynes, Sr. 25 October 1920 and published in the book "The Ancestry of Della Blevins Graham" by Della B. Ezekiel Joynes was listed in the 1784-1787 census of Wilkes Co.,NC and in the 1790 Census of Wilkes Co.. October of 1789 Ezekiel Joynes purchased 200 acres of land from Charles Walker of Franklin Co., Georgia. There was a Joynes family living in Georgia in the late 1700's, The Jabex Joynes family. Also the Noah Joynes family from KY has connections to Georgia in the late 1700's. In 1791 Ezekiel Joynes sold 100 acres to George Payne. The deed states that this was part of a tract of land sold to Ezekiel Joynes by Charles Walker. In the 1795 tax list of Wilkes co., Ezekiel is listed as Ezekiel Gines owning 187 acres of land and having 1 poll. Ezekiel Joynes left a will which was presented to the Wilkes Co. courts in August of 1803. Ezekiel sold his remaining land to Edmund Joynes in early July of 1803, which means that he probably died in July or August of 1803. In his will, he named his wife Sarah. He also named Thomas Joynes, Sayer Roberts, Piety Parson, and Edmund Joynes alias Edmund Gunter. The Joynes name is believed to be a Welsh variation of the name Johns, possibly originationg in Cheshire Co., England, which is located on the border of Wales. There was almost no record of the Joines/Joynes name in Scotland. Ezekiel Joynes: The Joynes family were among the early settlers of Monroe Co., Tennessee, first settling in the old sixth and seventh civil districts of Monroe Co. in the Chestua area. Many members of this family are buried in the old Chestua Baptist Church Cemetery and the older Chestua Cemetery, located nearby. There is an "upping Block" in the church yard there that Fred Newton Joynes said was where his grandmother and all the other lakies of the community used to mount their horses when they rode horses to church. Ezekiel Joynes first married a Scotch lady with brilliant red hair whose maiden name was Pruitt and he second married Sarah Gunter. Ezekiel was listed in his marriage to Sarah Gunter as Ezekil Goins According to Family Quest Archives Marriage Records Early to 1850 HIST 1746

    Thomas Joines (Joynes)

Thomas Joines was a Revolutionary War Veteran, proven by the Revolutionary War Pension Application of Jasper Billings. In this application Thomas Jines (Joines) swears in Court that he was with Jasper Billings at the Battle of Eutaw Springs, near Camden, South Carolina. It has been passed down through the Joines Family that Thomas Joines had a brother, Major Joines, that was killed at the Battle of Eutaw Springs.(Doc# 190)

    give moonstuff credit! for this

    Backgroun info.

Thomas Joines, Sr. the son of Ezekiel Joines of Wilkes County, NC, was born roughly 1750. He may be the Thomas "JINES" whose name appears on the 1778 tax list of Rowan County. He was in Wilkes County by September 1778, when William HILL recorded a claim to 100 acres on the Great Elkin River, adjoining the lands of "Thomas GOINS." During the years 1778, 1779, and 1780, Thomas "GOINS" entered eight different land claims in Wilkes County, amounting to about six hundred acres, on the Great Elkin River, Big Elkin Creek, the east fork of the Roaring River, and the Northeast Prong Branch.

Thomas Joines was a Revolutionary War veteran. In 1832, Thomas "JINES" of Wilkes County gave a statement in support of a pension application filed by Jasper BILLINGS (National Archives Pension File No. W10295) in which he declared that he and Jasper fought together in the Battle of Eutaw Springs, South Carolina.

"Thomas JINES who being first duly sworn according to law, deposeth and saith that he served with Jasper BILLINGS the above applicant during the three month tour mentioned in the foregoing declaration as having been performed under Capt. Alexander GORDEN to Camden where they joined Genl. GREENE and thence by Thompsons Fort to Eutaw Springs where the engagement was fought and from thence to Salisbury N.C. guarding the prisoners taken at the Eutaw Springs and where they were discharged…" [Signed by Thomas (X) JINES, his mark.]
There are no other records of Thomas Joines' Revolutionary service. However, it has been passed down through the family that Thomas had a brother named Major Joines who died in the Battle of Eutaw Springs.

Thomas Joines probably came to North Carolina in the 1770's from Delaware with his father Ezekiel Joines. There is an Ezekiel JOYNES who was part of a tax dispute in Sussex County, DE, in 1759 that resulted in the murder of Sheriff William OUTTEN. Ezekiel Joynes was one the tax protesters but was not involved in the murder. He remained in Sussex County until 1771 when he sold his land to John CLOWES and left the area. He may be the Ezekiel "JONES" on the 1778 tax list of Rowan County, NC, Capt. Lyon's District.

The name of Ezekiel Joines' first wife (i.e., the mother of Thomas Joines) is unknown, although some sources claim her last name was PRUITT (verification needed). "Ezikil GOINS" married Sarah GUNTER on July 14, 1779, in Rowan County, NC. Ezekiel Joines (Jones, Gines) appears on the 1787 state census of Wilkes County, NC, the tax lists of 1795 and 1797, and the federal census of 1790 and 1800. He deeded 100 acres of land on Cub Creek to "Edmond JOINES alias Edmund GUNTER" in July 1803, shortly before his death. (Wilkes DB C, p.519.) Edmund (who is also named in Ezekiel's will) was probably a son born before Ezekiel and Sarah were married. Ezekiel's will was recorded in Wilkes County in August 1803.

Ezekiel's son Thomas Joines married Mary CAUDILL about about 1779 based on the ages of their children. Her father, Benjamin CAUDILL, is said to have settled in Wilkes County by 1784. I have had difficulty finding much documentation on Benjamin Caudill; there are many posted family trees on the Caudill family, but details are conflicting and appear to contain a lot of unverified claims and assumptions. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has documented information on Benjamin Caudill.

Thomas and Mary Joines lived in the Blue Ridge mountains of Wilkes County probably around Traphill, on the upper branches of the Roaring River or Big Elkin Creek. Thomas Joines died in 1834; his burial place is unknown.

1834. Thomas Joines' estate was probated in Wilkes Co., NC, in 1834. His estate papers are located in the NC Archives, Wilkes County Original Estates 1777-1945, CR.104.508.27. Thomas' wife, Mary (Caudill) Joines, is probably the female age 60-69 in Thomas Joines' household in the 1830 census. She is not listed in any subsequent census, so presumably she died between 1830 and 1840.
