Hazel Irene Joines Brakebill, 98, died peacefully Sunday, December 21, 2025 after a long lifetime of love and happiness. Hazel was born in Madisonville, Tennessee to the late Jessie and Ross Joines. She grew up in Madisonville, TN where she attended Madisonville High School. She had 6 sisters: Huretta, Tommie, Harriette, Mildred, Jean and Nancy, 5 of whom preceded her in death. Hazel met and married Edward Harris Brakebill, who was a farmer and electrician. They had one child, Linda. The family moved to Nashville, where Edward worked for Ford Motor Company until his retirement. Hazel was a devoted wife and mother as well as worked several jobs from substitute teaching, to working in a five and dime. Edward preceded Hazel in death in 1997, after a brief struggle with cancer.  Hazel then moved to Georgia to be near her daughter. There she enjoyed growing flowers, reading and tending to her great-grandchildren, who very much adored her. An active and humorous woman, she loved to do word puzzles, to play SORRY, to play checkers and to tell jokes. Strong in faith, she prayed read her Bible daily and passed on the importance of Christ in the lives of her family. Hazel loved the Lord and her family, and was a lively and passionate advocate for both. Her motto in life was “Accept and go on, and do the best we can.” 

Hazel is survived by her daughter, Linda (Warren) Schultz, two grandchildren, David and Jennifer, 6 great-grandchildren: Gabrielle, Christopher, Alexandra, Gene, and Liam, sister, Jean Owen.

Preceded in death by husband, Edward Harris Brakebill, One great-grandchild, Tyler, and 5 sisters. 

Graveside service & interment 1 P.M. Tuesday, December 30, 2025 at Haven Hill Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Samaritan’s Purse at samaritanspurse.org or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at stjude.org. Arrangements by Biereley-Hale Funeral Home, Madisonville.
